Dolphin Wizard Puppetry’s chief puppetmaster and designer is Daniel Timothy Ballard, who has performed with Ibex Puppetry (Heather Henson’s company), taught puppetry to children and young adults, and designed and built puppets for both film and theatre.
Dolphin Wizard Puppetry’s songwriter/screenwriter/choreographer is Rachel Wayne (stage name Angela Knox), who has over two decades training and teaching experience in dance, acting, and singing.
DolphinWizard Co, the puppetry troupe born of our company, has worked to cultivate and curate new puppetry talent, while co-producing The Cinema Cabaret, a vaudeville show intended to highlight classic forms of entertainment. The show features puppeteers, dancers, and musicians with classic films and cartoons projected behind them.
We’ve been bringing puppetry to the vibrant cabaret scene in Gainesville, FL, as well as Orlando, New Smyrna Beach, Asheville, and Atlanta with our new Pop Rocks! series that blends puppet parodies with live musicians, dancers, and comedians. Our production jolts the audience by pushing the normal limitations of the entertainment experience, while paying homage to cult films and bands. Characters include our namesake, Gainesville’s infamous magical cetacean, an overly squeamish pterodactyl whose gag reflex gets in the way of his telling jokes, and naughty princesses rejected from a certain mouse-themed company. Our puppets sometimes even interrupt the show with their own puppet acts.
We also construct puppets for theatre productions, therapy, and special events. Dan works with directors and production designers to design beautiful and functional puppets that match the show’s aesthetic, and is able to train the puppeteers as well.
